About
MONTSERRAT
Let's
correct a few serious misconceptions:
The island has been completely
destroyed by the volcano.
Not true. Although we have a small, active
volcano, a phoenix-like resurrection is taking place in the Northern
sector of the island with new construction, a new airport and a planned
new town. The volcano has also created a unique tourist attraction with a
modern-day Pompeii and a lunar landscape.
The whole island has been
evacuated. Nobody lives there.
Not true. The island was never evacuated,
although an offer by the British Government has encouraged many people to
leave Montserrat. The current population is 5,000
people, down from a high of 11,500.
An
Island of
Villas
Read our BLOG about Villa Life in Montserrat -- and more about our house!
When the first real estate
developments started
in Montserrat, it
was decided to create an island of villas rather than an island of large
hotels and casinos. To this purpose, roads and services were provided to a
large area which was subdivided into serviced lots of minimum 1/3 acre.
Non-Montserratians are allowed to purchase property only in this
development area: currently this consists of Isles Bay (south of Belham
Valley), Old Town, Olveston and Woodlands.
The map below shows the
location of Isles Bay, Old Town, Olveston and Woodlands. Our home is in
Woodlands, the development area furthest North.
Beaches are located in
Old Town, Woodlands (both about 5 minutes from our house) and Little
Bay. These are all wonderful black sand beaches. A small white sand
beach North of Little Bay can be reached on foot from Little Bay.

Perhaps unique in
all the world, Montserrat is "an
island of villas" where people just like you, from all over the world have found a
very special place and have chosen to live here, part or the year or
all year round. When the owners are not present, many of these
luxurious villas are rented by one of the island's
reliable real estate
agents.
If you stop any of
the resident expatriates here, on a sunny morning and ask them why they
have chosen Montserrat as the place to fulfill
their dream of living on a tropical island, you will find their answers to
be as varied as their accents. Thirst-quenching spring water piped to each
villa; near-perfect year round climate cooled by the trade
winds; lush landscape; the absence of crime and drugs are some of
the reasons several holiday makers become residents. But expatriates
would all agree that the friendly, warm people of
Montserrat are the common reasons why they have
chosen the Emerald Isle as the "best place on planet
Earth".
Montserrat is the
Caribbean jewel where you can enjoy one of the few
remaining ecological systems in the region which is still intact and where
you can view its latest picturesque volcanic wonder from a safe
distance. This is a rare opportunity for you to own your piece of
paradise either as a main dwelling or a second home for return visits and
rental.
Whether you choose
to buy an existing villa, purchase land to build your own tropical dream
house, or rent a villa for a holiday stay, you are sure to enjoy all that
the Emerald Isle has to offer. Montserrat is one of the few islands left
in the West Indies that is still unspoilt and retains the gentle
enchanting Caribbean atmosphere almost as it used
to be.
